I have been thinking A LOT lately about being true, real, authentic, genuine, present (yep, still working on it) and I was so grateful to recently catch this song from Trolls - "True Colors." It depicts the importance of being ourselves and letting people see us, our true colors. "I see your true colors. That's why I love you, so don't be afraid to let them show. Your true colors are beautiful!"
I want to do that better - both in showing my true colors and in seeing others and their true colors.
I was also reminded recently of a sweet children's book called "The Boy Who Spoke to the Earth." The boy is looking for happiness, but not quite seeing it. He has to stop and stand still for a moment in all the beautiful places to find that happiness has been around him all along. Is there happiness around us that we're missing? Is there happiness we're not sharing? President Nelson has talked a little bit about this recently. We choose happiness and the Savior offers us eternal joy.
I think that some of the most beautiful and happy things around us are our relationships - other people (that we know and that we don't know). Do we see them? Do we give them our time and love (putting away distractions and focusing on what's most important - our Heavenly Father, our family, our neighbors)? Elder Renlund taught beautifully that we need to see others through God's eyes. I love that! Forget ourselves, be ourselves, and really see others...as He does. I think that must be a beautiful, colorful, happy world!

Bubbles
I really like this article! There are lots of good things to think about....
1. TRAVEL. See the world. Get outside your bubble. Go places. Experience life and people and things that are different than you. That's a great thing and we should do it whether near or far. We should learn about others and be open and also share about ourselves in the process.
2. BE YOU. We can't let the world change us. Before and as we go and after we return we need to truly know and remember who we are and be that. Obviously we learn and grow as we go, and must be humble, but we should be firm in our core beliefs and identity and not let the world determine that for us or make us afraid to share who we truly are.
I think that too often when we think of bubbles or sharing the gospel it sounds self-righteous. It shouldn't be. A humble learner and traveler will learn and share freely out of love and care and desire to learn and grow. (I heard a neat thing this week. Meekness is recognizing that others need you. Humility is recognizing that you need others.)
While we humbly learn and share we need to not be distracted! The world is loud and persuasive, so we need to be sure to stay focused on the most important thing - building Zion, truly becoming a disciple of Christ, making Christ the center of our lives.
I really like these two quotes from the article:

We need to be Zion people – A Zion Person. Pure in heart, and of one heart and mind. How do we do this? - Elder Ballard teaches that "we should not try to take ourselves or our children out of the world. The Lord does not need a society that hides and isolates itself from the world. Rather, he needs stalwart individuals and families who live exemplary lives in the world and demonstrate that joy and fulfillment that come not of the world but through the spirit and doctrine of Jesus Christ."
- Salt preserves and saves.
- We can't lose our savor or we're good for nothing! ;)
We can't hide ourselves (like a bubble implies), but we must preserve the purity of our salt and light and leaven and create our 'bubble' so that it makes a difference in the world and grows in influence (like the original article says.... start with ourselves, families, then communities, etc.). I think the world discounts bubbles. I think that those who are interested in creating a haven of peace and goodness in their lives and homes and families are sometimes judged unfairly and seen as self-righteousness or selfish. Those who choose to focus on and build and share the good should be valued and be able to share.
I'm reading Evicted right now. I don't recommend it, but it's eye-opening in some ways showing the cycle of the hard, sad life when there's no leaven, or haven, or peace. In some ways I believe these articles and thoughts are what comes after peace - peace and Zion means striving for oneness with God. That's what we work for and share.

Let Your Light Shine!
I’m grateful for LIGHT! A few things I think of when I think of light…
In Matthew 5:14-16 (from the Sermon on the Mount), Jesus teaches:
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
I love these verses, and the related verse in 3 Nephi 18:24 where the Savior teaches the Nephites:
Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do.
A few things I take from these verses:
In 2014 Sister Neill F. Marriott quoted President Monson who said, “If you want to give a light to others, you have to glow yourself.” So, the first step….we have to glow! How do we glow, shine, fill our own lives with light?
1. We must KNOW HIM! REMEMBER HIM ALWAYS, keep our covenants.
- President James E. Faust said, “A sacred light comes to our eyes and countenances when we have a personal bond with our loving Heavenly Father and His Son.”
Some ways we can know Him and find that bond….
- study, know truth (read the scriptures and words of the prophets)
- live, love truth (live the doctrine and keep the commandments)
- have faith, repent, follow the Spirit…
- spend time praying, fasting, serving in the temple, appreciating nature and good music, serving others, doing what He would do….
- learn, obey, be humble, follow Jesus (like the sunflowers!)
- be pure, virtuous (have clean hands, pure hearts)
- truly love, serve (pray for and practice charity)
- be true to who you are as a child of God!
- be happy, grateful, anxiously engaged in good!
- SMILE
- Elder Robert D. Hales tells the story of riding his bike home from basketball practice at night when he was a boy. He said, "I would connect a small pear-shaped generator to my bicycle tire. Then as I pedaled, the tire would turn a tiny rotor, which produced electricity and emitted a single, welcome beam of light. It was a simple but effective mechanism. But I had to pedal to make it work! I learned quickly that if I stopped pedaling my bicycle, the light would go out. I also learned that when I was 'anxiously engaged' in pedaling, the light would become brighter and the darkness in front of me would be dispelled. The generation of spiritual light comes from daily spiritual pedaling. It comes from praying, studying the scriptures, fasting, and serving—from living the gospel and obeying the commandments. 'He that keepeth his commandments receiveth truth and light,” said the Lord, “and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.'"
- Sister Elaine Dalton (YW General President at the time) taught in April 2012, “Your beauty—your “shine”—does not lie in makeup, gooey cream, or the latest clothing or hairstyles. It lies in your personal purity. When you live the standards and qualify for the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, you can have a powerful impact in the world. Your example, even the light in your eyes, will influence others who see your “shine,” and they will want to be like you…. If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world.”
- President Henry B. Eyring said: “Each time you choose to try to live more like the Savior, you will have your testimony strengthened. You will come in time to know for yourself that He is the Light of the World. … You will reflect to others the Light of Christ in your life.”
A few things that have brought light to my life this year:
2. Once we are glowing we need to share His light, not hide it or keep it to ourselves….
When we are filled with the light and joy of the gospel, like Lehi our first desire should be to call for our family and friends to partake of the fruit!
President Monson has given two talks on this exact subject that you might enjoy for further study:
The other talk was a Nov. 2011 BYU Devotional called “Be A Light to the World.” President Monson says: "Each of you is one of a kind. Each has had experiences unique to you and you alone. You come from varied backgrounds. And yet there is much that we have in common one with another. We know where we came from, why we are here, and where we will go when we leave this life. We know that we are children of our Heavenly Father and that He loves us. We know we want to return to Him after we leave this earthly existence. We know that what we do—and don’t do—here in mortality is of utmost importance. We also know that, should we fall short, our Savior has provided us with the precious gift of the Atonement and that, if we change our lives and our hearts and take advantage of the power of the Atonement, our sins and shortcomings will be forgiven and forgotten.
"We have in common the gospel of Jesus Christ. And we know it is our responsibility to share the truths of the gospel with others. One of the chief ways in which we can share the gospel is to be a righteous example. The Apostle Paul admonished, “Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” He also wrote that the followers of Christ should be “as lights in the world.”
"Just as turning on a light switch in a dark room will bathe the room in light, so providing an example of righteousness—and therefore being a light—can help to illuminate an increasingly dark world. Our opportunities to shine are limitless. They surround us each day, in whatever circumstance we find ourselves. As we follow the example of the Savior, ours will be the opportunity to be a light, as it were, in the lives of those around us—whether they be our own family members, our coworkers, mere acquaintances, or total strangers."
Essentially he tells us that we must be an example of the believers. In small, but meaningful ways we can share our testimonies and the hope that is in us….
- be aware, observe and serve!
- be a friend
- forget yourself and go to work!
- Maybe some of you have read the book, The Orphan Keeper by Camron Wright. A quote that has been discussed in our family since some of us read it was by a character who lost a family member and suffered a lot. She says, “‘My only journey of concern was to be like the sun, to make it through the day offering as much light and warmth and consistency for others as I could--one single day. Each day. That was all... So from that day on, I have continued to get up in the morning and offer that light, as much as I am able, in my own small way.'"
- I LOVE President Monson mentioning our uniqueness. We have different backgrounds, experiences, talents, personalities, opportunities. I think that’s on purpose. The Lord needs our uniqueness to help reflect the Savior’s light to touch different people in different places and in different ways. If we are willing and ready He will use us to bless others and bring them home to Him! He loves us. He loves each of His children! (This gives me hope. Sometimes, to those of us that may tend to be more introverted, it can be overwhelming to be seen, to shine, to not hide… but our unique talents and testimonies are needed. We truly can share and give of ourselves...in small ways that make a big difference.)
- President Faust tells the story of a 13-year-old girl waiting for the bus. A man driving by noticed that she was always smiling every day, rain or shine. Sometime later this same girl invited his daughter to a church activity...and eventually the missionaries taught the family and they were baptized. The father didn’t realize the connection at first, but is ever grateful for the girl at the bus stop who shared her smile….and more. :D
3. My last take away from the scripture in Matthew has to do with motives and why we share His light - to glorify Him!
- The world is kind of a showy place these days. Everyone is looking for the spotlight and to be their own light. In 2 Nephi 26, Nephi teaches that “priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion.”
- I think it’s important that we remember that the Lord is asking us to reflect His light. Do what He would do in order to accomplish His work and His glory - “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”’
- In D&C 4, we’re reminded that “faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, quality [us] for the work.”
- In D&C 82, the Lord tells us to “seek...the interest of [our] neighbor, and do..all things with an eye single to the glory of God.”
- Matthew 6:22 teaches, “if...thine eye be single to the glory of God, thy whole body shall be full of light.”
- I love the metaphor in John 15 where the Lord says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing…. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.”
- We need to share goodness. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” But remember why we do. A pure heart will help us to accomplish God’s work and His will.
- There’s a lot more I need to learn and study about light and God’s glory in D&C 88 and 93, if you’re interested.
In closing….just a few thoughts as a reminder that there are people around us that need light. We learn in the Doctrine and Covenants 123 that “there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations… who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it—Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing [it] to light.” There are some who once had light, but are searching again.
Elder Bednar said to a group of BYU-Idaho students in 2002: “In a world increasingly filled with darkness, the image of Christ in [your] countenances...will radiate a light that will literally…‘chase darkness from among you.’”
Mosiah 16:9: “He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened.”
D&C 50:24: “That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.”
A couple of years ago an observant friend saw that I needed a new light bulb and brought one by a few days later. This might sound like a light bulb joke, but it got me thinking - How many light bulbs does it take to light the world? ;) ALL of them/each one of us!
Seriously, I hope that as we think about who we want to become in 2017 we will think about someone that might need some light and put the Savior’s light on a candlestick, on a hill, for them and others to see. We can smile, open our mouths, point others to Christ. Let’s not bury our talents, our testimonies, our light, our hope, our joy. The restored gospel of Jesus Christ, His Atonement, His love are the answers that will heal the world. I hope we will choose light, be light, follow Him, glow, shine, seek to glorify God! He will lead and guide us as we seek Him and desire to share.
The words in Matthew 5:14-16 are an invitation, a call to action. As we proactively look for ways to increase the light in our lives and share it with others I know that we will be blessed. We will find greater happiness and joy, we will help our Heavenly Father do His work, and we will bring joy to those around us.
Sister Camilla Kimball taught that we should "never suppress a generous thought."
Mother Teresa said, “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”
President Hinckley said, “Wear on your countenance the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ — the good news that He came into the world.”
I’m grateful for so many people - my parents, my family, my friends, many of you - who have shared your light with me, uplifted and helped lead me to Him. I'm grateful for an opportunity to share my testimony of these things. I love the Lord and His gospel. It’s truth, it’s light, it’s joy! I know this is His true church and that He is the Light and Life of the world. There’s a plan and purpose to our lives here and eternally!
- Gratefully, the days are getting longer again….and someday there will be light after work with time to go hiking! ;)
- Some of the greatest blessings in life are sunrises and sunsets. It’s fun to find a good place to enjoy them. In fact, I know of a few places and cultures where climbing to the top of the highest mountain to see the first sunrise of the new year is more important than staying up until midnight to celebrate. I’ve enjoyed that a couple of times, but was more traditional this year. ;)
- This morning I was listening to Music and the Spoken Word and heard Lloyd Newell talking about sunflowers and how they are constantly tracking and following the sun, the light! What a great reminder for us.
- Light reminds me of some happy and bright children in Ghana that I got to visit for a few days during a study abroad project with my graduate program. We were working with them and a nonprofit that builds playgrounds that generate electricity that is stored in batteries and lights the children can take home to read by. They truly appreciated light.
- I remember a lot of light on my mission in South Korea. On the day I flew through Seoul I wondered what I had gotten myself into. Coming from a tiny town in Hawaii I was now living in the second largest city in Korea - with lights and people everywhere. A few months into my mission our mission president came to visit our tiny apartment in a large apartment building complex that was just one of many in Pusan. He reminded us how the light shined brightly from our little home out to the loud, busy, crowded world around. I felt small with a limited vocabulary at that time, but was grateful for the reminder that the light of the gospel was consistent, pure, and true. The world around us has become more confused, loud, busy, and dark since then, but the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, His love and Atonement is truly the only thing that will heal and save and bless all of our Heavenly Father’s children.
- I remember a beautiful morning several years ago in the Mt Timpanogos Temple. I was sitting in the celestial room just as the sun came up and it FILLED the whole room and my heart with hope and peace and joy.
- Light is truth, joy, happiness, direction, peace, goodness.
- Joseph Smith saw a pillar of light exactly over his head. That light has changed the world forever.
- There was a new star and a day and a night and a day that were light for the Nephites announcing the Savior’s birth.
- After three days of darkness/destruction the Nephites saw a wonderful light coming down from heaven - the Savior!
- The brother of Jared asked for light and received much more than he imagined.
- Alma the Younger and King Lamoni and his father described the joy and the “marvelous light” they found when they were converted, when they remembered and turned to Christ and their hearts were changed.
- Jesus Christ truly is the light of the world! His light is what gives life and purpose and meaning to all the rest!!
- The scriptures, the words of the prophets are full of LIGHT! Just the examples I found take up many pages. ;)
- We can share the light of Christ with others. I loved participating in the Church’s #LIGHTtheWORLD campaign. So many of the things we were asked to do pointed us directly to the Savior and his selfless example of goodness. They were small, but meaningful and intentional acts that helped us be more like Him. A few of my favorites (and some I still need to do): visit a caregiver, carry someone’s backpack, call your mom, learn about mental illness or giving sight or mobility to someone, text someone a scripture, invite a neighbor to dinner, sit by someone new, stop and listen when a child talks, ask for advice, sing, buy hand warmers to distribute, leave encouraging notes, cheer someone on, offer a prayer of pure gratitude, say nice things about someone behind their back, don’t complain, make note of people’s birthdays, be aware of someone you haven’t noticed before - get to know them.
- I was uplifted by the examples of family, friends, and strangers around me:
- I loved hearing my nieces and nephews tell me about the things they did - bringing dinner to a man who couldn’t hear or get up to make his own food, taking flowers to their primary teacher, making and distributing hygiene kits to homeless people, collecting food and toys to take to the families without much;
- I was inspired by someone in the car in front of me who had a ready-made lunch to hand to the man at the side of the freeway exit asking for money;
- I was grateful for the sweet Muslim woman who recently came from Iraq and is in an English class I teach for refugees who (on the day we were supposed to express gratitude) lifted me up with her kind expression of thanks and a hearty “MERRY CHRISTMAS!”

- Reading the Book of Mormon. This year I studied JOY! There is much! The greatest joy seems to come from gratitude, faithfulness, obedience, righteousness, food, family, work, worship, covenants, service, the temple, freedom, truth, scriptures, prophets, repentance, Christ, conversion, missionary work, the Spirit
- Visiting the Priesthood Restoration Site in Harmony, Pennsylvania and thinking about the truth and light that came to earth and that we enjoy in even greater measure now.
- Attending the temple regularly.
- Time spent in the mountains! :D
- Chances to serve.

- Maybe some of you have read the book, The Orphan Keeper by Camron Wright. A quote that has been discussed in our family since some of us read it was by a character who lost a family member and suffered a lot. She says, “‘My only journey of concern was to be like the sun, to make it through the day offering as much light and warmth and consistency for others as I could--one single day. Each day. That was all... So from that day on, I have continued to get up in the morning and offer that light, as much as I am able, in my own small way.'"
- I LOVE President Monson mentioning our uniqueness. We have different backgrounds, experiences, talents, personalities, opportunities. I think that’s on purpose. The Lord needs our uniqueness to help reflect the Savior’s light to touch different people in different places and in different ways. If we are willing and ready He will use us to bless others and bring them home to Him! He loves us. He loves each of His children! (This gives me hope. Sometimes, to those of us that may tend to be more introverted, it can be overwhelming to be seen, to shine, to not hide… but our unique talents and testimonies are needed. We truly can share and give of ourselves...in small ways that make a big difference.)
- President Faust tells the story of a 13-year-old girl waiting for the bus. A man driving by noticed that she was always smiling every day, rain or shine. Sometime later this same girl invited his daughter to a church activity...and eventually the missionaries taught the family and they were baptized. The father didn’t realize the connection at first, but is ever grateful for the girl at the bus stop who shared her smile….and more. :D
3. My last take away from the scripture in Matthew has to do with motives and why we share His light - to glorify Him!
- The world is kind of a showy place these days. Everyone is looking for the spotlight and to be their own light. In 2 Nephi 26, Nephi teaches that “priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion.”
- I think it’s important that we remember that the Lord is asking us to reflect His light. Do what He would do in order to accomplish His work and His glory - “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”’
- In D&C 4, we’re reminded that “faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, quality [us] for the work.”
- In D&C 82, the Lord tells us to “seek...the interest of [our] neighbor, and do..all things with an eye single to the glory of God.”
- Matthew 6:22 teaches, “if...thine eye be single to the glory of God, thy whole body shall be full of light.”
- I love the metaphor in John 15 where the Lord says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing…. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.”
- We need to share goodness. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” But remember why we do. A pure heart will help us to accomplish God’s work and His will.
- There’s a lot more I need to learn and study about light and God’s glory in D&C 88 and 93, if you’re interested.
In closing….just a few thoughts as a reminder that there are people around us that need light. We learn in the Doctrine and Covenants 123 that “there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations… who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it—Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing [it] to light.” There are some who once had light, but are searching again.
Elder Bednar said to a group of BYU-Idaho students in 2002: “In a world increasingly filled with darkness, the image of Christ in [your] countenances...will radiate a light that will literally…‘chase darkness from among you.’”
Mosiah 16:9: “He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened.”
D&C 50:24: “That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.”
A couple of years ago an observant friend saw that I needed a new light bulb and brought one by a few days later. This might sound like a light bulb joke, but it got me thinking - How many light bulbs does it take to light the world? ;) ALL of them/each one of us!
Seriously, I hope that as we think about who we want to become in 2017 we will think about someone that might need some light and put the Savior’s light on a candlestick, on a hill, for them and others to see. We can smile, open our mouths, point others to Christ. Let’s not bury our talents, our testimonies, our light, our hope, our joy. The restored gospel of Jesus Christ, His Atonement, His love are the answers that will heal the world. I hope we will choose light, be light, follow Him, glow, shine, seek to glorify God! He will lead and guide us as we seek Him and desire to share.
The words in Matthew 5:14-16 are an invitation, a call to action. As we proactively look for ways to increase the light in our lives and share it with others I know that we will be blessed. We will find greater happiness and joy, we will help our Heavenly Father do His work, and we will bring joy to those around us.
Sister Camilla Kimball taught that we should "never suppress a generous thought."
Mother Teresa said, “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”
President Hinckley said, “Wear on your countenance the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ — the good news that He came into the world.”
I’m grateful for so many people - my parents, my family, my friends, many of you - who have shared your light with me, uplifted and helped lead me to Him. I'm grateful for an opportunity to share my testimony of these things. I love the Lord and His gospel. It’s truth, it’s light, it’s joy! I know this is His true church and that He is the Light and Life of the world. There’s a plan and purpose to our lives here and eternally!

Fishers and Hunters
In Jeremiah 16:16, the Lord says through his prophet, Jeremiah, "Behold, I will send for many fishers...and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks." He is talking about the time of the Restoration of the gospel in the latter-days and the gathering of Israel. This is an oft-quoted and even memorized verse, but I really appreciated a recent insight shared with me that has opened my eyes to more about what this means for me.

He invites all of us to come to Him and we can be fishers, too, and share the gospel's message and blessings with others. When thinking about missionary work we often think about being fishers and shepherds, but I hadn't thought much about the importance of being hunters. ;) This may sound too aggressive, but I think it's the example that President Monson has taught. Be deliberate, search after and find and rescue the one.
In studying and thinking about being a fisher and being a hunter a little bit more I came across a wonderful article in the June 2015 Ensign, "Fishers of Men" by Elder Scott D. Whiting (my bishop when I was a youth, definitely one of the fisherman in my life). We work together to extend our Heavenly Father's love and message to all of His children.

Have you fished? Have you hunted? When have you been fished for? hunted after? How did you feel? When helping others come to Christ we must do the work His way and by His Spirit...and I think often it is one person at a time.
I remember a day on a bus in Pusan, Korea in 2001 when I learned for myself how much our Heavenly Father loves each of His children, individually. We weren't the only Christian missionaries in Korea. Religion was actually discussed quite a bit and other churches proselyted...on the streets, on the buses, door-to-door. It wasn't unusual for someone to get on the bus and start shouting their message to the whole busload of people hoping they could convert a large group at once. ;) I would chuckle to myself sometimes when I was sitting on one of these buses, but I have to admit that sometimes I wondered whether that might not have been more effective - why not shout to all the bus, all the world the important message we had of the restoration? :) I remember distinctly an impression one of those days, "No, that's not how we do it. Each person will have their chance to learn and understand and come to know the gospel for himself/herself. This message, this plan, this gospel is for each individual and He sends one missionary to one individual to teach and bring them to Christ."
That's the same pattern we see in 3 Nephi 11:14-15 when the Savior invites every individual to come and feel the marks in his hands and feet for themselves. It's the same lesson He gives in the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15:3-7. He loves us and will find us and bring us home....and He asks us to be fishers, and shepherds, and hunters to seek after His sheep. What a blessing for us and for them! Our Heavenly Father truly loves each of us!

We Are All Enlisted
Today was a "we are all enlisted" kind of day. I'm not a soldier or anything close to it, but felt an urgent, hopeful, purposeful call to action today. It was quiet, but direct....and I'm grateful.
In a world that is more and more confused each day it is so good to know Who we follow and why we do, and why we're even here to begin with. ;) This call to battle is not a physical thing, but spiritual and even more important. It can be easy to be distracted, even by good things, but I'm grateful for the clarity and peace and purpose I found in these words today.
Mosiah 2:41, "Consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it."
Alma 42:15, "And now, the plan of mercy could not be brought about except an atonement should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also."
3 Nephi 11:15, "And it came to pass that the multitude went forth, and thrust their hands into his side, and did feel the prints of the nails in his hands and in his feet; and this they did do, going forth one by one until they had all gone forth, and did see with their eyes and did feel with their hands, and did know of a surety and did bear record, that it was he, of whom it was written by the prophets, that should come."

I left church today wanting to spend all my time studying and learning the gospel better, but also wanting to spend all my time doing all the missionary work I could and finding all those that are searching for hope, as well as really wanting to learn how to do my family history research and....it can be overwhelming to think about all that there is to do, but it's also so exciting and helpful to know and have a purpose. I need to work on my specific focus so that I actually do something, but I'm grateful for the inspiration and the HOPE!!! We can't do everything, but we can do something...and we must do something. Today. :) ....because God lives, we have a Savior, there is a Plan! He wants us to be happy, to succeed, to come back to Him....and there is work to do.

More Hope - Hosanna, Hallelujah!
Easter (Jesus Christ, His resurrection, and victory over death and sin) means hope and I've seen it in so many places lately!!!!

- Palm Sunday and those that cheered and welcomed Him to Jerusalem - HOSANNA!
- Remarkably this year on Palm Sunday members of the Church in Utah got to participate in the Provo City Center Temple Dedication and rejoice in a building restored to a greater purpose that can bring us closer to Him! As a part of that dedication, we were reminded of Isaiah 61:3, "Appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified." He gives us beauty for ashes and guides us safely home. He may ask, "If I want to remodel, what's that to you?" We can have faith in the owner of the building. ;) Sometimes he lets it rain....but we can remember to look at our life through heaven's eyes, give then as Jesus gives...singing, singing all the day, and remember the Savior, Redeemer of My Soul.
- George Frederich Handel's Messiah, particularly as performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir - really incredible! Some of my favorites:
- "And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it" (Isaiah 40:5).

- "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things" (Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15).
- "But thanks be to God, Who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57).
- "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. Blessing and honor, glory and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever. Amen" (Revelations 5:12-14).
- Anytime we get to reflect on the life of the Savior we are blessed!
- Even during trials across the world or close by, there is hope! It might seem that all of the world is turning crazy and choosing a different path, but we can still stand up for right and find peace in the chaos!

More Joy
There really is joy all around when that's what we seek! Tonight I found more joy at the temple, and particularly when I came across this verse: 3 Nephi 28:10, "And for this cause ye shall have fulness of joy; and ye shall sit down in the kingdom of my Father; yea, your joy shall be full, even as the Father hath given me fulness of joy; and ye shall be even as I am, and I am even as the Father; and the Father and I are one;"
If you go back to the preceding verses you'll find that the Savior is speaking here to the three Nephite disciples who desired to "bring the souls of men unto [Him], while the world shall stand." So, that's the "cause" that will bring a "fullness of joy" and I believe that is very instructive for each of us. We may not all be here until the "world shall stand" but we are here in the world now and every time we bring someone (even and maybe even particularly ourselves) to Him we are blessed!
If you go back to the preceding verses you'll find that the Savior is speaking here to the three Nephite disciples who desired to "bring the souls of men unto [Him], while the world shall stand." So, that's the "cause" that will bring a "fullness of joy" and I believe that is very instructive for each of us. Rejoice in Christ!
With lots of crazy things going on in the world and with the simple distractions of life, I am grateful today more than ever for the reminder in Sunday School to REJOICE in Christ!!
I love Nephi's explanation as to why he shares so many of the words of Isaiah....2 Nephi 11:
"Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ; for, for this end hath the law of Moses been given; and all things which have been given of God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of him.
"And also my soul delighteth in the covenants of the Lord which he hath made to our fathers; yea, my soul delighteth in his grace, and in his justice, and power, and mercy in the great and eternal plan of deliverance from death.
"And my soul delighteth in proving unto my people that save Christ should come all men must perish.
"For if there be no Christ there be no God; and if there be no God we are not, for there could have been no creation. But there is a God, and he is Christ, and he cometh in the fulness of his own time.
"And now I write some of the words of Isaiah, that whoso of my people shall see these words may lift up their hearts and rejoice for all men. Now these are the words, and ye may liken them unto you and unto all men."
.....after many wonderful insights and Messianic prophecies of Isaiah (that I need to study and understand better) we come back to Nephi and his plainness and clarity and this verse:
2 Nephi 25:26, "And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."
I am grateful for Jesus Christ and the hope and peace and meaning that His life brings to my life!
On a related note, one very important way we come to know and rejoice in Christ is through the scriptures (as Nephi taught by example). I was inspired by a discussion about improving scripture study today:
President Packer taught, "Make scripture reading a part of your regular routine, and the blessings will follow. There is in the scriptures a voice of warning, but there is also great nourishment." How have the scriptures nourished you?
President Benson said, “I am convinced that each of us, at least some time in our lives, must discover the scriptures for ourselves—and not just discover them once, but rediscover them again and again." How do you rediscover the scriptures?

.....after many wonderful insights and Messianic prophecies of Isaiah (that I need to study and understand better) we come back to Nephi and his plainness and clarity and this verse:
2 Nephi 25:26, "And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."
I am grateful for Jesus Christ and the hope and peace and meaning that His life brings to my life!
On a related note, one very important way we come to know and rejoice in Christ is through the scriptures (as Nephi taught by example). I was inspired by a discussion about improving scripture study today:
President Packer taught, "Make scripture reading a part of your regular routine, and the blessings will follow. There is in the scriptures a voice of warning, but there is also great nourishment." How have the scriptures nourished you?
President Benson said, “I am convinced that each of us, at least some time in our lives, must discover the scriptures for ourselves—and not just discover them once, but rediscover them again and again." How do you rediscover the scriptures?
Ten ways to improve our scripture study:
- Look for Jesus Christ.
- Look for inspiring words and phrases.
- Look for gospel truths.
- Listen to the Spirit.
- Liken scriptures to ourselves.
- Ask questions as you study.
- Use scripture study helps.
- Record your thoughts and feelings.
- Study words of the latter-day prophets.
- Share your insights.
President Monson taught, "As we read and ponder the scriptures, we will experience the sweet whisperings of the Spirit to our souls. We can find answers to our questions. We learn of the blessings which come through keeping God’s commandments. We gain a sure testimony of our Heavenly Father and our Savior, Jesus Christ, and of Their love for us."

Like Him
I have been inspired recently by a simple, but profound and important principle that has made me think a lot about what it means to really be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
At our stake conference recently we were reminded very sweetly, but with some urgency:
"But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.
"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen." (Moroni 7:47-48)
Of all the good things we could be doing or focusing on, we must simply remember that all that really matters is that we are becoming more like Him, our Savior Jesus Christ. We should honestly ask ourselves, "Am I like Him?" We can ask as we serve in our callings, "How will this draw us to Him and make us like Him?" We should pray, "How can I be more like Thy Son?" And then listen and follow. He will teach us and purify us and make us holy, make us one.
We are taught in John 17:3: "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." We may ask how can we know Him. It is through the Holy Ghost. We should do what leads to the Spirit in our lives and then do what the Spirit leads us to do. Relatedly, we are promised the Spirit in our lives ALWAYS as we worthily partake of the sacrament. What a blessing each week that we can participate in this sacred and holy ordinance - it is not common, but a wonder! The Savior sustains, lifts, delivers us, makes us completely clean and new, and promises His Spirit as we repent and promise to remember Him. Sacrament meeting is memorial service for Jesus. He invites us to come!
A few other tidbits from stake conference that I think were very instructive:
* The Savior can fix anything! We need not worry, but come to Him!
* Abide with me; 'tis eventide: "O Savior, stay this night with me; Behold, 'tis eventide."
* President Howard W. Hunter said, "If our lives and our faith are centered upon Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, nothing can ever go permanently wrong."
* Mosiah 25:10: "When they thought of the immediate goodness of God, and his power in delivering Alma and his brethren out of the hands of the Lamanites and of bondage, they did raise their voices and give thanks to God."
* Abraham 3:17: "There is nothing that the Lord thy God shall take in his heart to do but what he will do it."
* Stay with Him. Go no more out! Watch with Him one hour. Don't be offended. Don't be weary. Be a "follower of righteousness" (see Abraham 1:2). Pray always. Surround ourselves with goodness, so that there's no room for monsters under the bed. ;) Seek Jesus (see Ether 12:41).
* Go to the temple. "Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest." (D&C 84:20)
I also just finished ready a really great book - In His Steps by Charles M.Sheldon (apparently there is also a movie). In this book a community church decides for a year to live by their answer to the question "What would Jesus do?" in everything that they do. This commitment changes individual lives and the community. People get outside themselves and their comfort zones and focus on loving and serving and living like Jesus would in their position. It is a powerful example of putting beliefs into action, and it is a different application for each one, but a great reminder to ask and to DO it! <3
While thinking about this topic I also came across a talk given by President Ezra Taft Benson at BYU in March 1979 called "In His Steps." He encourages us to grow as Jesus did and "increase in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." President Benson teaches:

There is a lot to do, but it's wonderful to be reminded of our purpose and path....to be like Him!

May Christ Lift Thee Up
"My son, be faithful in Christ; and may not the things which I have written grieve thee, to weigh thee down unto death; but may Christ lift thee up, and may his sufferings and death, and the showing his body unto our fathers, and his mercy and long-suffering, and the hope of his glory and of eternal life, rest in your mind forever." - Moroni 9:25
I love the Book of Mormon! I know it's the word of God - an important record of ancient prophets written for our day that brings us to Christ! As I finished reading it again today in a special place I was reminded of this verse. I love Mormon and Moroni and their examples of faithful service, commitment, and goodness during a time of great wickedness....even when they were alone they focused on what was most important and found HOPE in Christ! What a necessary example for us today and just the reminder I needed in my life!
It seems somewhat related to this article I read recently - Faith as a mustard seed
Also very related and connected - I love the temple! It is full of so much peace and clarity and light and truth and blessings and joy and perspective! I found that again tonight and I'm grateful! It's good to make the effort to go (even and maybe especially on a cold, snowy night)! I was also reminded of what a beautiful pattern the temple is for our lives and homes. It's clean and uncluttered, it's simple, it's beautiful! There is light and peace. I think some of this comes from the fact that there are no distractions - the only thing you will find really to pick up or look at are scriptures! And I don't think there's much else that you need. ;) It made me think about my home and how I organize it and make it beautiful and create it as a space to focus on what's most important - a comfortable place to read the scriptures and have my mind opened up to the blessings of heaven! In the temple it really feels like we can be uncovered from any barriers and the blessings and direction come right down to us!

Just after learning and thinking about these things, someone at Church shared Alma 8:14-15 which gives similar hope: "And it came to pass that while [Alma] was journeying thither, being weighed down with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and anguish of soul, because of the wickedness of the people who were in the city of Ammonihah, it came to pass while Alma was thus weighed down with sorrow, behold an angel of the Lord appeared unto him, saying:
"Blessed art thou, Alma; therefore, lift up thy head and rejoice, for thou hast great cause to rejoice; for thou hast been faithful in keeping the commandments of God from the time which thou receivedst thy first message from him. Behold, I am he that delivered it unto you."
"Blessed art thou, Alma; therefore, lift up thy head and rejoice, for thou hast great cause to rejoice; for thou hast been faithful in keeping the commandments of God from the time which thou receivedst thy first message from him. Behold, I am he that delivered it unto you."
Christ lifts us up! He sends angels and blessings and comfort and direction and peace....even when we are weighed down with trials and sorrow, and especially when we are working to serve Him and His children. He is there watching over us. "With blessings unmeasured my cup runneth o'er." (See "The Lord is My Shepherd")

Witnesses
I have been reminded lately of the importance of witnesses, particularly witnesses of Christ. I recently saw "Savior of the World" with my family. It is wonderful! Everyone needs to see it or read it or listen to the music or study the scriptures referenced (or all of the above)! It is a sweet testimony of the Savior and His mission. I've always loved the shepherds role in the story of Christ's life, but I was particularly touched at the end of Act 1 when the shepherds tenderly come to visit and witness the Savior's birth and then obediently, diligently, immediately and enthusiastically proclaim His birth to all they can find: "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord."
Then at the end of Act 2 Jesus teaches His disciples to feed His sheep. It occurred to me while watching that the very best way we can feed His sheep is to testify of Him and bring others to Him - the Good Shepherd, the Great Redeemer.
I have also been reading a wonderful book by Elder Oaks, With Full Purpose of Heart. My favorite part of this book happens to be the chapter about being a witness of Christ. I appreciated Elder Oaks' very clear call to each of us to be a witness of Jesus Christ - to teach and testify of Him and live our lives according to His teachings.
"'The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it (Joseph Smith, p. 21).'"
"How do members become witnesses beyond the mere fact of their membership? The original apostles were eyewitnesses to the ministry and resurrection of the Savior (Acts 10:39-41). He told them, 'Ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth' (Acts 1:8; Acts 10:42-43). However, He cautioned them that their witnessing would occur after they had received the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:49). An eyewitness was not enough. Even the witness and testimony of the original apostles had to be rooted in the testimony of the Holy Ghost (p. 21)."
"The mission of the Holy Ghost is to witness of the Father and the Son (2 Nephi 31:18; 3 Nephi 28:11; D&C 20:27). Consequently, everyone who has received the witness of the Holy Ghost has a duty to share that testimony with others (p. 22)."
"Those that have the gift to know must give their witness so that those who have the gift to 'believe on their words' can enjoy the benefit of that gift (p. 23)."
"As I see the deterioration in religious faith that has happened in my own lifetime, I am convinced that we who are members of His Church need to be increasingly valiant in our testimony of Christ (p. 25)."
One final witness of Christ - the December 2015 Ensign includes a powerful article by President Boyd K. Packer - A Witness of the Savior Jesus Christ. These are very tender insights from one of His chosen leaders. And now each of us must "seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and also the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of them, may be and abide in [us] forever" (Ether 12:41) and then we must go share our witness with the world!! :)

A Home for Jesus
Today I was uplifted by a Christmas message by Bishop Gerard Causse. He talked about the blessing of temples and how Jesus now has a home. While He was here on the earth Jesus didn't have a home. He spent most of His life, particularly His ministry, traveling to bless and teach others, but now with temples all over the world, He has a home! We recite the story of His humble birth in a stable because there was not even room in the inn.
As disciples of Christ (particularly the General Authorities, but all of us in our own way) are asked to go where He directs, to travel, to teach, to bless. We may give up some of our comforts. Our most important goal should be to make a home for Jesus...in our homes, in our lives, in the temple, by helping others. Remember... "When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:38-40).
This is so applicable today, in large and small ways. For example - Jesus Would Help the Syrian Refugees. Victor Hugo said, “to love another person is to see the face of God.” Instead of letting fear enter our hearts or control our lives we can try to see as He does, love as He does, and this is how we make a home for him - make a home for others, love them, let them in, take care of them physically and spiritually.

Guide Me to Thee
The lyrics of this song have been coming to my mind over and over the past few weeks. I think they are instructive, but also particularly pertinent and important today:

The world follows a different path and priorities, but I know we will be happy as we follow Him!! I loved a thought brought up by our Sunday School teacher today while we were discussing Timothy and Titus and how to finish our course with faith. She mentioned 1 Timothy 1:6, "some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;" What a phrase - "vain jangling"!! ;) It paints a picture in my mind and turns me back to the words of this song and prayer - "Guide me to Thee"!!
I'm also reminded of a quote I read recently by Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin. He shares an example from the life of President Heber J. Grant: "A few weeks before President Heber J. Grant passed away, one of the Brethren went to visit him in his home. Before the man left, President Grant prayed, “O God, bless me that I shall not lose my testimony and keep faithful to the end!” Can you imagine President Grant, one of the great prophets of the Restoration, the President of the Church for nearly 27 years, praying that he would keep faithful to the end? No one is immune from Satan’s influence and temptations. Do not be so proud to think that you are beyond the adversary’s influence. Be watchful that you do not fall prey to his deceptions. Stay close to the Lord through daily scripture study and daily prayer. We cannot afford to sit back and take our salvation for granted. We must be anxiously engaged our whole lives."

Be a Light
I happened to get up right in time today to hear Lloyd Newell's message from Music and the Spoken Word and I was inspired and grateful for the light it brought into my life and the reminder to be a light to others:
"Moonlight, with its soft, silver tones and the enchanting mood it casts, has captured our fancy for centuries. It has been the subject of countless poems, songs, serenades, and evening walks. We marvel at how bright a full moon can seem sometimes, even though we know it is merely reflecting the light it receives from the sun. All around us, objects reflect or absorb light. Snow reflects almost all the light that reaches it, while black asphalt absorbs it, which explains why roads get so hot on sunny days. And what about us? How much light do we reflect? Do we brighten the world for others and share the hope and cheer of a sunny outlook? Or do we only take, pulling in energy but never giving any back?
There are countless ways to share light with others. When we extend a helping hand, when we take time to listen, when we give a sincere compliment, when we teach a child, we are reflecting light. Mother Theresa said, “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” Yes, even something as simple as a smile bounces light and love back into the world.
We are drawn to people who reflect joy and optimism. They seem to have a luster, a light, a glow about them. We find ourselves not only wanting to share their company but also striving to emulate their example, to shine with similar brilliance. Unlike the moon, snow, or asphalt, we can choose how much light we give. We can decide to reflect the good around us and help others see “the bright side.” Very often, when our goal is to provide as much light as we can, we inspire others to do the same. If everyone made this simple choice, perhaps our collective radiance would be enough to light up the entire world."

"I would like all of the youth of the Church to know that they are children of light. As such, they have a responsibility to be “as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15). They have a charge to keep their light aflame and burning brightly....
With a strong testimony of the Savior and His restored gospel, you have limitless opportunities to shine. They surround you each day, in whatever circumstances you find yourselves. As you follow the example of the Savior, yours will be the opportunity to be a light, as it were, in the lives of those around you—whether they be members of your own family, classmates, co-workers, mere acquaintances, or total strangers.
When you are a light to the world, people around you will feel a special spirit that will make them want to associate with you and follow your example."

Sunday Strengthening
Today was a difficult, but wonderful day that helped me see who I am and who I need to be. I wasn't quite prepared, but had the opportunity to publicly share and defend my testimony of some very important principles that are being challenged right now. The experience (after all was said and done) strengthened me and helped me clarify and understand even more surely what I believe and also how I need to prepare to do that better and with greater love in the coming days. :) I'm grateful. I love the Lord. I know that our Heavenly Father loves us (and every one of His children, our brothers and sisters) perfectly and His plan is perfect! Jesus Christ is the way! The quest of our lifetime is to learn Their plan and live Their teachings. ;)
A few things that strengthened me today:
Divine Attributes of Christ: Virtue. Our visiting teaching message this month was particularly sweet and important to me today. President Faust taught, "Virtue in its fuller sense encompasses all traits of righteousness that help us form our character." President Hinckley adds, "Love of God is the root of all virtue, of all goodness, of all strength of character." And I love this quote from the lesson: "Through His virtue, Christ can heal, enable, strengthen, comfort, and cheer when we choose with courage and faith to reach out to Him." While talking with several different sisters about how virtue empowers and strengthens us I was inspired by their examples of goodness and
Why Marriage, Why Family by Elder D. Todd Christofferson, April 2015. I don't know if there could have been a more timely talk to study in Relief Society and I learned much! A few highlights:
"If in the course of our mortal experience, we chose to “do all things whatsoever the Lord [our] God [should] command [us],” we would have kept our “second estate.” This means that by our choices we would demonstrate to God (and to ourselves) our commitment and capacity to live His celestial law while outside His presence and in a physical body with all its powers, appetites, and passions. Could we bridle the flesh so that it became the instrument rather than the master of the spirit? Could we be trusted both in time and eternity with godly powers, including power to create life? Would we individually overcome evil? Those who did would “have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever”—a very significant aspect of that glory being a resurrected, immortal, and glorified physical body. No wonder we “shouted for joy” at these magnificent possibilities and promises."
"A family built on the marriage of a man and woman supplies the best setting for God’s plan to thrive—the setting for the birth of children, who come in purity and innocence from God, and the environment for the learning and preparation they will need for a successful mortal life and eternal life in the world to come. A critical mass of families built on such marriages is vital for societies to survive and flourish. That is why communities and nations generally have encouraged and protected marriage and the family as privileged institutions. It has never been just about the love and happiness of adults."
"Our claims for the role of marriage and family rest not on social science but on the truth that they are God’s creation. It is He who in the beginning created Adam and Eve in His image, male and female, and joined them as husband and wife to become “one flesh” and to multiply and replenish the earth. Each individual carries the divine image, but it is in the matrimonial union of male and female as one that we attain perhaps the most complete meaning of our having been made in the image of God—male and female. Neither we nor any other mortal can alter this divine order of matrimony. It is not a human invention. Such marriage is indeed “from above, from God” and is as much a part of the plan of happiness as the Fall and the Atonement."
"In the premortal world, Lucifer rebelled against God and His plan, and his opposition only grows in intensity. He fights to discourage marriage and the formation of families, and where marriages and families are formed, he does what he can to disrupt them. He attacks everything that is sacred."
"To declare the fundamental truths relative to marriage and family is not to overlook or diminish the sacrifices and successes of those for whom the ideal is not a present reality....everyone has gifts; everyone has talents; everyone can contribute to the unfolding of the divine plan in each generation. Much that is good, much that is essential—even sometimes all that is necessary for now—can be achieved in less than ideal circumstances. So many of you are doing your very best. And when you who bear the heaviest burdens of mortality stand up in defense of God’s plan to exalt His children, we are all ready to march. With confidence we testify that the Atonement of Jesus Christ has anticipated and, in the end, will compensate all deprivation and loss for those who turn to Him. No one is predestined to receive less than all that the Father has for His children."
"May we each find approval in His sight. May marriages flourish and families prosper, and whether our lot is a fulness of these blessings in mortality or not, may the Lord’s grace bring happiness now and faith in sure promises to come."
The Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of a sum total of good and evil acts—what we have done. It is an acknowledgment of the final effect of our acts and thoughts—what we have become. It is not enough for anyone just to go through the motions. The commandments, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly Father desires us to become.
The Master’s reward in the Final Judgment will not be based on how long we have labored in the vineyard. We do not obtain our heavenly reward by punching a time clock. What is essential is that our labors in the workplace of the Lord have caused us to become something. For some of us, this requires a longer time than for others. What is important in the end is what we have become by our labors.
Promises Are Sure. The music and messages of sacrament meeting helped me remember the great love our Savior has for us and the need for us to show our love for Him. I was also reminded of the importance of remembering the Lord's promises. He keeps thems. We have also made promises with Him and must remember to keep them, too. (President Eyring taught this sweetly in October 2012.)

Final Judgment. I had prepared to teach this lesson which brought me to these beautiful quotes and an even more real discussion than I had anticipated that helped me truly see "how great the wisdom and the love" of our Father's "grand design where justice, love, and mercy meet in harmony divine!"

When the Lord measures an individual, He does not take a tape measure around the person’s head to determine his mental capacity, nor his chest to determine his manliness, but He measures the heart as an indicator of the person’s capacity and potential to bless others.
Why the heart? Because the heart is a synonym for one’s entire makeup. We often use phrases about the heart to describe the total person. Thus, we describe people as being “big-hearted” or “good hearted” or having a “heart of gold.” Or we speak of people with faint hearts, wise hearts, pure hearts, willing hearts, deceitful hearts, conniving hearts, courageous hearts,cold hearts, hearts of stone, or selfish hearts.

In contrast to the institutions of the world, which teach us to know something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become something.

Therefore, what we insistently desire, over time, is what we will eventually become and what we will receive in eternity. “For I [said the Lord] will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts” (D&C 137:9; see also Jer. 17:10).
God thus takes into merciful account not only our desires and our performance, but also the degrees of difficulty which our varied circumstances impose upon us. No wonder we will not complain at the final judgment, especially since even the telestial kingdom’s glory “surpasses all understanding” (D&C 76:89). God delights in blessing us, especially when we realize “joy in that which [we] have desired” (D&C 7:8).
However, in contrast to God’s merciful plan for our joy and glory, Satan “[desires] that all men might be miserable like unto himself” (2 Ne. 2:27).
Like it or not, therefore, reality requires that we acknowledge our responsibility for our desires. Brothers and sisters, which do we really desire, God’s plans for us or Satan’s?
Righteous desires need to be relentless, therefore, because, said President Brigham Young, “the men and women, who desire to obtain seats in the celestial kingdom, will find that they must battle every day”. Therefore, true Christian soldiers are more than weekend warriors.
“Do you,” President Young asked, “think that people will obey the truth because it is true, unless they love it? No, they will not”. Thus knowing gospel truths and doctrines is profoundly important, but we must also come to love them. When we love them, they will move us and help our desires and outward works to become more holy.

* "The Lord needs valiant servants to do His work in the latter-days, who follow the teachings of Jesus and serve His people in a loving way....I'll stand for truth, I'll stand for right. The Lord can depend on me."
